General Course Information
Instructor: Melissa Williams
Master ASE Certified, L1, Automotive Technician
The course starts in early August (end of July) and runs until the middle of the following June. Class is Monday through Friday 8am until 3:30pm with some Fridays off for students. On these days off, called Make-up Days, from 8:00am until 11:00am students can come in to receive additional training, make-up work, and make-up time lost. With 10 months of study to cover such a vast amount of information the course requires concentration and the desire to learn. This is not an easy course.
Students are not allowed to miss more than 10 days (60 hours) for the entire year. Promptness to class is a must 1 minute late will count as 1 hour and 6 tardies/hours equals one day. Those hours can add up quickly. This policy enforces good work ethics in the students. If you can't come to school an employer will question your ability to come to work.
Cell phone use is not permitted during class, for any reason. They must be kept hidden and on vibrate or off. Calls and texts can be taken by walking outside of the classroom to be answered. Excessive use of a cell phone during class hours will not be tolerated. The second time you are caught with your cell phone you will be sent home, and that class absence will count against your 15 days.
A tool list for required tools will be distributed at the beginning of the school year and at the beginning of the second semester (mid-January). The approximate cost of the tools on the first semester list is $1300 and for the second semester $900. This list is created by the instructor and the tools (or their equivalents) must be purchased by October 1st for the first semester and by March 1st for the second semester.
There will be homework for this course. Homework will include but is not limited to reading assignments, worksheets, online learning assignments, YouTube video assignments, and workbook assignments. So be prepared to do homework. All assignments given will receive a grade. No late assignments will be accepted, and assignments not completed will be given a zero for a grade.
Grades will be given for homework, classroom assignments, quizzes, tests, shop tasks and participation.
Grading is on a 10 point grading scale and is as follows:
A 90% - 100%
B 80% - 89%
C 70% - 79%
D 60% - 69%
F You need to study more
Students must maintain a 70% cumulative grade percentage to remain in the class. Grading periods are every 4.5 weeks. If a student's grade is below 70% for that marking period they will be placed on academic probation. If for the second consecutive marking period, the students' grade does not exceed 70% the student will be withdrawn from the program. Students must have at least a 60% in each class to complete the program and graduate no matter what their cumulative grade is.
Students will take 4 ASE Certification tests while they are in the program. The cost of these exams is included in the student's tuition for the course. Two tests will be taken at the end of each semester. Students are responsible for travel to and from the testing site.
The James Rumsey Technical Institute Campus is a non-smoking campus. There is a designated smoke area for adult students just off campus.
Upon completion of the end of the year you will receive a Certificate of Automotive Technology. This program counts for one year of automotive experience when it comes to the requirement to wear the ASE Automobile Technician patch. Those who do not attend such a program must wait two years. If you pass an ASE certification exam after one more year of working in the automotive field, you are permitted to wear the patch on your shoulder. You may also take the EPA Section 609 Refrigerant Handling and Storage certification test online and earn that certification also. West Virginia state inspection classes are also usually offered to my students at the end of the school year.
